Health Insurance for College StudentsWhen you are getting ready to head off to college, health insurance is the last thing on your mind.  Most people who are getting ready for their school year are getting together their books and supplies, packing everything that they will be taking with them and if they are attending a school that is far away from home, they are saying their goodbyes to the friends and family that they will not be seeing for a while.  One thing that is commonly forgotten but extremely important is health insurance for college students.  There is a lot about college life that makes health insurance so important.  The added stress of the increased workload, living in close quarters within the dorm buildings and crowded classrooms make a perfect breeding ground for many contagious viruses and other bacterial illnesses.  Some colleges require all students that are enrolled to have health insurance in place when they get there, but there are a lot of schools that do not require their students to be insured.  There are a few options to consider when looking for college student health insurance plans.

The Best Bet For Health Insurance For College Students

Without a doubt, one of the best options for health insurance for college students is to stay on their parents’ health insurance plan if possible.  There are some reasons that a college student may not be able to use their parents’ health insurance while they are in school.  If the student is going to be attending a school that is far away from home, than their parents’ health insurance coverage may not have participating providers in the area that they will be attending school.  In some cases, that may not be a problem.  Some health insurance programs still offer coverage for out of network providers, they just charge a higher co-payment or cover a lower percentage of the total bill. Find out if your health insurance program covers visits with out of network providers by calling the issuing health insurance company’s customer service department and asking them if they will cover an appointment with an out of network provider who is far from your home coverage area.

The Next Place For College Student Health Insurance

The second place to look into college student health insurance plans is through the school.  A lot of colleges and universities offer health insurance programs at discounted rates for their students.  These programs can be sub-par in some cases, but there are some good health insurance programs that are offered through colleges and universities.  Always be sure to look at the coverage that is offered carefully.  Some of these health insurance programs are not designed to help cover major medical issues or emergency services.  They are designed more for routine check-ups, prescriptions and doctors visits that are due to minor illnesses.  Also be sure that the college student health insurance program does not have a deductible that is too high for the college student to afford if they were faced with having to pay it all at once due to an accident or injury.

Individual Insurance As A Substitute For College Student Health Insurance Plans

If the college student that will be insured is one of those lucky people who seldom gets sick and does not have any pre-existing conditions that would drive up their premiums with an individual health insurance plan, it may be a better option.  Some individual health insurance programs are extremely affordable and can give great rates for a candidate who has no pre-existing conditions that will cost the health insurance company money.  This option is never one that should be ignored when shopping for college student health insurance.  There is an advantage to being young and healthy; much lower health insurance premiums and great coverage at a low rate.
